Kiama Greens address gender imbalance on Council

women-for-councilWith the 2016 Kiama council elections looming, women being under represented in local government is a concern.

For the first time in many years, Green’s Councillor Kathy Rice is the only woman among the nine Kiama Council members. Women make up fifty one percent of Kiama’s population and are key decision makers in families and in our community.

“More women on Kiama Council would balance the way that local community issues are understood by the Council” says Kathy Rice.

“I’ve contributed well in my council term and I have developed a very good understanding of local government. I’m looking forward to building upon my work for urban liveability and future agricultural security.

The Greens ticket includes three woman candidates Kathy Rice, Beth Woodstone and Jodi Keast, who have an impressive range of experience between them including community development, international politics, child protection, business and government
administration, and financial and strategic management.

Beth Woodstone is confident of her ability to take on the role. “Being a woman and a mother connects you to the community in a special way – I am out and about a lot, taking my kids to the park, to school, medical appointments, shopping and sport. I understand the challenges faced by families and I hope to be their voice on Council.”

“Beth, Jodi and I will be responsive to our whole community and to the council.” says Kathy. “We have a lot to offer and as a strong team we are confident that we can make a difference.”
